Vedanta has invested nearly $600 million to double zinc production capacity at South Africa’s Gamsberg mine to 500,000 tonnes annually.

Vedanta Limited has invested nearly $600 million to expand its zinc operations in South Africa. The project will double its annual production capacity in the country to 500,000 tonnes. The expansion is taking place at the Gamsberg mine in the Northern Cape province. It forms part of the company's wider strategy to increase zinc production.

The second phase of the Gamsberg project has increased the mine's annual zinc-in-concentrate capacity to around 500,000 tonnes. The expansion was inaugurated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar in October.

Vedanta Ltd aims to produce 3 million tonnes of zinc annually across its Indian and South African operations. Its subsidiary, Hindustan Zinc, is targeting annual production of 2 million tonnes. Meanwhile, Vedanta Zinc International aims to contribute 1 million tonnes a year from its South African operations.

The investment is also part of Vedanta's broader commitment to South Africa. The company pledged 21 billion South African rand.

The expansion is expected to strengthen the Northern Cape's role in the mining industry. It could also support employment, skills development and wider economic activity in the region.

Vedanta has also invested nearly $20 million in community programmes in South Africa since acquiring Vedanta Zinc International in 2011. These initiatives cover healthcare, education, infrastructure, sports and livelihood development. The programmes benefit more than 32,000 people each year, according to the company.

Zinc is widely used in construction, automotive manufacturing and infrastructure. It is particularly important for galvanising steel, a process that helps prevent corrosion and extends the material's service life.

The expansion strengthens Vedanta's production base in South Africa as it works towards its long-term output target.
