Oil Prices Hold Near $98 As US-Iran Talks, Middle East Supply Outlook Keep Traders Cautious

Oil prices remained near $98 a barrel as traders weighed the impact of possible changes in Middle East supply. The next move will depend on US-Iran talks, crude export flows and whether supply disruptions begin to ease.
Oil prices held near $98 a barrel on Thursday, October 1, after a sharp rise in the previous session, as traders assessed the outlook for Middle East crude supplies and the latest developments in US-Iran talks. Brent crude futures were up 12 cents, or 0.1%, at $98.15 a barrel, while WTI crude was down 7 cents, or 0.1%, at $90.35.
The market is now focused on whether a breakthrough in US-Iran talks could allow disrupted oil supplies to return. Any improvement in regional exports could ease the supply premium in crude, while a setback in negotiations could revive concerns over shortages and push prices higher.
Why Are Oil Prices Steady Today?
Oil prices are being pulled in two directions. On one side, traders are assessing whether a diplomatic breakthrough between the US and Iran can help restore disrupted crude flows. On the other, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to keep supply risks in focus.
The recent rise in oil prices has also been linked to concerns over Middle East supply disruptions. Brent had moved sharply higher in the previous session before giving up some of those gains as the market assessed the possibility of improved regional exports.
The key question for crude is whether additional supply can return to the market quickly. A clearer path towards reopening disrupted routes and restoring exports would ease the supply premium in oil prices. Any fresh disruption, however, could push prices higher again.
What Is Next For Brent Crude Prices?
For now, the direction of oil prices will depend largely on the US-Iran talks and developments around Middle East crude exports.
Brent is trading near the $98 a barrel mark after the latest move, while WTI remains around $90. Investors will also watch whether the recent recovery in regional supply gathers pace and whether geopolitical risks begin to ease.
The market has already seen how quickly crude prices can move on headlines from the region. A further improvement in supply prospects could keep prices under pressure, while renewed disruption fears could reverse the recent pullback.
