Vishal Mega Mart shares surge after CEO Gunender Kapur’s term is extended by five years.

Vishal Mega Mart shares rallied sharply after the company extended CEO Gunender Kapur's term by five years, addressing succession concerns flagged by analysts, even as the stock posted strong Q1 FY 2026-27 earnings growth.

Shares of Vishal Mega Mart jumped as much as 11.57% to hit a high of Rs 115.40 on the NSE in early trade on Monday, August 24. The rally followed an exchange filing after market hours on Friday, August 21, in which Vishal Mega Mart announced the reappointment of Gunender Kapur as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Based on the recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee, the board approved his reappointment for five years from September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2031. He has also been redesignated as Founder, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Kapur was originally appointed MD and CEO for a three-year term effective June 27, 2024, which was due to expire on June 26, 2027. The filing also said he is not debarred from holding the office of Director under any SEBI order or by any other authority.

Kapur has more than 42 years of experience in management and investment across the consumer and retail sectors. He has previously worked with Hindustan Lever Limited, Unilever Nigeria PLC, Reliance Industries Limited and TPG Capital.

Separately, the company's board approved the grant of 4.68 crore stock options to eligible employees at an exercise price of Rs 102.60 per option under the Vishal Mega Mart Employees Stock Option Plan 2019.

The reappointment provides greater clarity on leadership continuity at the hypermarket chain, which had been a concern for investors.
