The Tata Group's upcoming semiconductor plant in Assam, with an investment of ₹27,000 crore, will get government incentives worth ₹14,044 crore. The state Assembly received the details on Thursday.

Replying to a question from Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi, Industries Minister Bimal Borah shared the incentive breakup:

  • Central government contribution: ₹10,255 crore

  • Assam state government sanction: ₹3,789 crore

  • Total incentive package: ₹14,044 crore

  • Total project investment: ₹27,000 crore

The plant is being developed by Tata Electronics as an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility at Jagiroad in the Morigaon district, on the land that once housed the Hindustan Paper Corporation's Nagaon Paper Mill before it shut down.

At full capacity, the plant will manufacture up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day. It will deploy advanced packaging technologies, including flip chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP), putting it at the higher end of what assembly and test facilities in India currently handle.

The employment projections give a sense of the facility's scale:

  • Total jobs expected: Over 27,000

  • Direct employment: Around 15,000

  • Indirect and ancillary jobs: Remainder

For Assam, which has historically had limited large-scale industrial presence, a project of this size carries significance well beyond the chip count.
