Sun Pharmaceutical Industries said it has received approval from the South African health regulator to make and market a generic version of a semaglutide injection for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes. It is the second market after India where it has got the approval. Read ahead to know more.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has secured regulatory clearance from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to manufacture and market a generic version of semaglutide injection in the country.
The approval covers use of the product in adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. South Africa is the second market after India where Sun Pharma has received approval for generic semaglutide, and the company plans to launch the product in the coming days.
Product Details
The semaglutide injection will be available as a pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen in two strengths, 2 mg/1.5 mL and 4 mg/3 mL, both designed for once-weekly dosing. The format offers flexibility for patients managing type 2 diabetes on a long-term basis.
Sun Pharma's chief operating officer said the South African approval reflects the company's ability to develop complex generic medicines that meet stringent quality standards across different regulatory environments. He added that the company remains committed to improving patient access to evidence-based treatment options.
Why South Africa Matters
South Africa is dealing with a rising burden of type 2 diabetes, a trend driven in part by rapid urbanisation and changing lifestyles. The condition is putting tremendous strain on patients and the country’s healthcare system as it grows in prevalence. Better access to affordable and effective treatments such as generic semaglutide is anticipated to be a major part of the solution to this national health challenge.
Semaglutide is among the most sought-after diabetes treatments globally, and the approval in South Africa reinforces Sun Pharma’s standing in the diabetes care segment.
Revital Takes A New Turn
In another development, Sun Pharma’s multivitamin brand Revital has launched a new marketing campaign with Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal, shifting its messaging from conventional themes of physical tiredness to a wider conversation about stress and energy in modern life.
The campaign, developed by Ogilvy India, positions stress rather than nutritional deficiency as the primary driver of declining energy levels. It will be rolled out across television, digital platforms, OTT, connected TV and social media.
Revital's formulation contains 20 essential nutrients, including natural ginseng, and has been clinically tested to reduce stress and improve energy levels. Sun Pharma's executive director said the campaign reflects how consumer needs have shifted in a fast-paced world where mental demands are as significant as physical exertion in shaping everyday energy levels.
