L&T Wins Major Battery Storage Order Worth Up To ₹10,000 Crore In Middle East

Larsen & Toubro has secured a “major” order to construct three battery energy storage system projects in the Middle East, with a combined storage capacity of 6 gigawatt-hours, worth ₹5,000-10,000 crore. Read ahead to know more.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on Tuesday that its renewables business has secured a major order, valued at ₹5,000-10,000 crore under the company's internal classification system, for three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the Middle East.
According to a company filing, the projects will have a combined storage capacity of 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh), with each project featuring a four-hour battery storage system designed to store surplus electricity during periods of low demand and supply it back to the grid during peak hours.
At 12:25 PM on 25 August, L&T shares were down 0.20% at ₹4,078.00 apiece.
Technology And Infrastructure Used
The battery storage systems will provide the ability to shift energy, storing excess clean energy generated during off-peak periods and releasing it during peak demand.
The solution is expected to incorporate liquid cooling technology, which the company said would enable higher power density, enhanced safety and an extended operational life for the batteries.
The order also entails building infrastructure such as substations and underground cabling to connect the projects to the power grid, L&T said.
Contribution To Grid Modernisation
According to the company, the three projects are expected to support grid modernisation and renewable energy integration across the Middle East, with the systems designed to improve grid stability and enable greater use of clean energy in the region.
The scope of work covers requirements regarding plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality standards and compliance with project timelines.
L&T Order Classification
L&T classifies orders in the ₹5,000 crore-10,000 crore range as "major", while the ₹10,000 crore-15,000 crore orders are termed "mega". Larsen & Toubro is a diversified multinational engaged in engineering, procurement and construction projects, hi-tech manufacturing, and a range of products and services across multiple geographies.
