Hindustan Copper Share Price Surges Over 7% As Global Copper Prices Near Record High

Hindustan Copper shares surged over 7% on Monday, August 17, as global copper prices rose nearly 16% this year amid tightening supply concerns and heavy metal flows into the US ahead of an anticipated tariff decision.
Shares of the state-run copper mining company Hindustan Copper surged 7.36% in intraday trade on Monday, 17 August, emerging as the top gainer on the Nifty 500 index as global copper prices moved close to record highs. The stock touched an intraday high of Rs 568 on the NSE, compared with the previous close of Rs 529.05, before paring some gains to trade around 6.9% higher at Rs 566 during the session.
The rally followed a sharp move in international copper markets, with the London Metal Exchange's cash contract trading at a premium of as much as $518.50 a tonne over the three-month contract, pointing to tighter near-term availability. Copper futures for the September 2026 contract on the CME were trading around 1.41% higher at $6.7065 per 25,000 pounds, compared with $6.61 at the previous close.
Copper prices have risen nearly 16% so far this year. The metal has also gained more than 1% over the past five sessions, around 6.7% in the last month, 6.2% over three months and more than 17% over six months.
Much of the recent rally has been driven by heavy flows of copper into the US as traders positioned ahead of an anticipated tariff decision from the Trump administration. Potential duties on refined copper imports could reduce the supply available to markets outside the US and alter global trade flows.
While global copper inventories remain adequate overall, stockpiles have accumulated in the US outside LME-tracked warehouses as traders remain wary of possible American duties on refined copper imports. Chinese demand, meanwhile, has remained comparatively weak.
A recent report from Shanghai Metal Market also flagged concerns over the immediate availability of copper amid a tightening market structure and a prolonged decline in LME inventories. The report said global supply and demand have become increasingly fragmented as markets assess the possibility of a 15-30% tariff increase on refined copper imports.
For Hindustan Copper, higher copper prices can support realisations and improve the company's revenue and profitability, given its exposure to the metal.
Hindustan Copper Business Update
Anupam Mishra, Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Copper, told CNBC-TV18 last week that the company was targeting around 32,000 tonnes of metal-in-concentrate production this year, up from 27,000 tonnes in the previous year, while maintaining its broader production goals.
Mishra said the focus remained on accelerating project execution and mine development to support higher output over the longer term. The company is looking to expand production capacity as demand for copper grows across sectors.
Separately, Hindustan Copper announced after market hours on Friday, 14 August, that it would appoint two new part-time, non-official independent directors to its board. Ashish Kumar Khetan and Madhumita Daolagupu were named as the new appointees.
