Google Offers Employee Exit Packages Across Five Countries As Heavy AI Investments Put Pressure On Operating Costs

Google has expanded voluntary employee buyout offers to five countries, including Switzerland, as it manages rising AI costs. Read more about the latest workforce changes.
Google’s employee buyout programme has been offered in five countries as it looks to control rising costs amid heavy investments in artificial intelligence (AI). The company began offering exit packages in June to select employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland, Reuters reported.
Google confirmed the latest expansion but did not disclose how many employees had accepted the offers. The move comes as technology companies face growing pressure to manage spending while investing heavily in AI infrastructure and development.
Why Is Google Offering Voluntary Exit Packages?
A Google spokesperson told Reuters that the company introduced voluntary exit programmes in some teams in 2025 and expanded them to a few countries in June this year.
The latest Google voluntary exit programme follows similar initiatives rolled out in certain divisions in the US and UK since last year. Google has described these packages as an option for employees who may no longer feel aligned with the company's direction or pace of work.
However, the programme does not cover all employees. Workers in Google Cloud and its AI research division, DeepMind, have been excluded from previous buyout rounds. These are also among the areas where the company plans to prioritise hiring.
What Is The Situation In Switzerland?
In Switzerland, where Google employs around 5,000 people and operates a major engineering centre in Zurich, the programme covered several divisions but excluded DeepMind, according to people familiar with the matter.
The company announced the offers in mid-June and informed applicants of its decisions by mid-July. Employees who accepted were eligible for severance equivalent to one month's salary for every year of service, capped at 12 months.
At least four employees from a team of around 50 reportedly accepted the offer.
The cost-control push comes as Google AI spending draws investor scrutiny. Microsoft has also offered voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees, highlighting broader efforts among technology companies to manage workforce costs while funding AI expansion.
