Tata Power Renewable Energy Adds 72.5 MW Solar Capacity In Bikaner

Tata Power Renewable Energy has added another operating asset to its renewable portfolio, taking its total renewable utility capacity to 12.3 GW. The new project is expected to generate 166 million units of green energy annually and help offset over 1.18 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions.
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) on Thursday commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar power project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan, developed for Tata Steel. Power from the facility will be supplied to the steelmaker through TP Vardhman Surya, a subsidiary of TPREL.
Project Highlights
Project type | Captive solar |
Power supplied to | Tata Steel |
Annual generation | 166 MUs |
Annual carbon offset | 1,18,856 tonnes |
Solar modules | 1,71,360 |
The commissioning takes TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity to 12.3 GW. Of this, around 7 GW is already operational, comprising 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind capacity. Another 5.3 GW is under various stages of implementation, including 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind projects.
Tata Steel’s Decarbonisation Push
The project forms part of Tata Steel’s efforts to increase its use of renewable electricity and reduce the carbon intensity of its operations. Its captive structure allows the company to receive power generated specifically for its requirements through the TPREL subsidiary.
For TPREL, the commissioning adds to its operating renewable portfolio and strengthens its presence in supplying clean energy to industrial customers. The company said the project also reflects its focus on executing technology-driven renewable energy assets.
