As India’s EV market moves beyond early adopters and into the mainstream, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles intends to launch four new electric vehicle models and over ten refreshes of its current lineup by FY31 and targets achieving over 30% EV penetration. Read ahead to know more.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles is gearing up for the next leg of India's electric vehicle growth with an ambitious product offensive. The company will have 10 EV nameplates in its portfolio by FY31, with four new models added to the existing six, while more than 10 facelifts and refreshes will be launched across the range.
The strategy is aimed at pushing EV adoption beyond the early-adopter segment and into the broader mainstream market. The company is looking at 30% EV penetration by FY31.
Sceptical Buyers Are The Next Frontier
India's EV market has shifted. According to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, the technology has moved past the early-adopter phase and into the early majority, the segment of buyers who need to see proven success stories before committing to a purchase.
Beyond them sits the late majority, a more sceptical group that follows only once widespread adoption has already occurred. The company's product and pricing strategy for the next five years is being shaped around converting both these groups.
Existing Models To Get Fresh Faces
The company currently sells six EV nameplates: Xpres-T, Curvv.ev, Harrier.ev, Nexon.ev, Punch.ev and Tiago.ev. Four new additions are planned by FY31. These include the Sierra.ev, a model based on the company's Avinya concept, and two others yet to be formally announced. Alongside these launches, the existing portfolio will go through more than ten facelifts and refreshes to keep it competitive.

Battery And Charging Improvements
Product volumes alone are not the full story. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles is also working on significantly improving the technology underpinning its EVs. The company is working on a third-generation battery with a capacity of more than 75 kWh which is expected to offer a range two to three times higher than the current generation, with a three times faster charging speed and an increase in battery energy density of 20 to 23%. These improvements are meant to address two of the most common concerns among potential EV buyers – range anxiety and charging convenience.
A combination of a wider model range, technology upgrades and a deliberate phased approach to market segments is Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ effort to defend its leadership position in India’s fast-moving electric passenger vehicle market.
