Tata Elxsi has partnered with Sarla Aviation to develop Shunya, a seven-seater electric air taxi. The collaboration covers avionics, software, testing and certification, with potential applications in logistics, healthcare and defence.

Design and technology services company Tata Elxsi has entered into an initial agreement with Bengaluru-based aviation start-up Sarla Aviation. The partnership will focus on developing Sarla Aviation’s electric air taxi platform, Shunya. Under the agreement, Tata Elxsi will provide engineering expertise for key avionics functions. Its role will cover flight control systems, software integration, testing, verification and validation, as well as certification support.

Sarla Aviation will remain responsible for the design and development of Shunya. It will also lead the platform’s type-certification process.

The collaboration could extend beyond the initial scope. Tata Elxsi is expected to support sensor-fusion-based navigation software, industrial and structural design, and airworthiness testing.

Tata Elxsi Managing Director and CEO Manoj Raghavan said the partnership reflects the role of engineering innovation and ecosystem development in advancing new forms of transportation. He added that the initiative would allow the company to apply its aerospace, mobility and digital technology expertise to emerging aviation platforms.

The companies also expect the partnership to strengthen capabilities for potential applications in logistics, air ambulance services and defence.

Shunya is an electric air taxi designed for flight operations of more than 300 km. The aircraft is configured to carry seven people, including the pilot.

The platform combines vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability with the efficiency of fixed-wing cruising. This allows it to operate without conventional runways while aiming to improve propulsion efficiency.
