Hindalco Commissions India's First Superfine PPT ATH Plant In Belagavi

Aditya Birla Group’s metal flagship Hindalco Industries has moved further up the value chain.

The company has commissioned a greenfield plant in Belagavi, Karnataka, to manufacture Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) in India for the first time.

What Does The Plant Make?

PPT ATH is a high-value, halogen-free flame-retardant used in halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. In cables, it helps suppress flame spread and smoke without releasing halogen acid gases, making electrical and infrastructure systems safer. Hindalco currently sells its version under the InnoSafe brand.

The plant will initially start with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, which will cater to domestic demand for safer cables from the wire and cable industry. It is built for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes as demand grows.

Why Is It Significant?

The plant marks a step up the value chain for Hindalco, while also supporting domestic production and sustainability.

• It brings domestic production of a material India previously had to source from elsewhere, supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat push in critical fire-safety applications.

• This plant will be the world's only speciality alumina plant to run entirely on renewable energy.

The timing also could not be any better. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables, aligning Indian norms with global safety benchmarks and supporting wider adoption across infrastructure, electrical and mobility uses, including electric vehicles (EV).

How Does It Fit Hindalco's Business?

The company’s managing director, Satish Pai, said the commissioning would strengthen Hindalco’s leadership position and enhance its high-value speciality alumina portfolio in India.

The move sits within a large existing business: Hindalco is India's leading producer of speciality alumina, making more than 120 grades of non-metallurgical speciality alumina for over 1,000 customers across 42 countries.

The new Superfine PPT ATH line extends that range into advanced flame-retardant applications.

Note that Hindalco is launching several new downstream solutions for the air conditioning and refrigeration industry, railways and metros, and EV batteries.

The company is also accelerating its upstream expansion in both aluminium and copper while building a significantly strong downstream portfolio with the ambition of delivering a fourfold increase in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) by FY30.

Overall, the Belagavi plant is a modest addition in tonnage terms, but a notable one in intent.

For Hindalco, it is another step in moving its alumina business up the value chain, away from bulk metal and towards higher-margin speciality products.
