TRAI Seeks Views On 5G Network Slicing QoS Norms; Jio, Airtel, Vi Among Key Telcos Likely To Be Impacted

TRAI has sought stakeholder feedback on QoS norms for 5G network slicing to protect user experience. The proposed rules are expected to influence 5G monetisation and compliance across Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL and MTNL.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a consultation paper seeking stakeholder feedback on quality of service (QoS) norms for 5G network slicing. The proposal aims to ensure that premium enterprise services do not compromise the experience of regular mobile users. The regulator has invited comments until 26 August and counter-comments until 7 September.
Network slicing enables telecom operators to create multiple virtual networks on a shared 5G infrastructure. Each slice can be customised for a specific application. These include smart factories, healthcare, autonomous vehicles, cloud gaming and smart city deployments. TRAI has proposed that operators should monitor the quality of every network slice separately. The regulator also wants views on whether operators should reserve a minimum level of physical resource blocks (PRBs) to meet agreed service standards.
The consultation comes as India's telecom sector looks beyond consumer mobile broadband to generate returns from multi-billion-dollar 5G investments. Network slicing is widely seen as one of the biggest enterprise revenue opportunities in the 5G era. However, TRAI has stressed that differentiated services should not reduce network quality for ordinary subscribers. The consultation also revisits questions around net neutrality and premium service offerings.
Impact On Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL And MTNL
The proposed framework will have the greatest impact on Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Both telecom providers have rolled out 5G at a national scale. They are also expanding into enterprise-focused offerings.
Jio operates a nationwide standalone (SA) 5G network, while Airtel has been strengthening its 5G capabilities. The new QoS rules could require both companies to invest further in network monitoring, resource allocation and compliance systems. At the same time, a clear regulatory framework could accelerate commercial adoption of premium enterprise services.
Vodafone Idea could also benefit if the framework creates stronger confidence among enterprise customers. The Telecom has been expanding its 5G rollout in selected cities. Also, it is working to improve network performance. Defined QoS standards may help Vodafone Idea compete for enterprise contracts despite its slower 5G deployment compared with larger rivals.
State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) are also expected to be affected. BSNL is deploying indigenous 4G infrastructure with a roadmap towards 5G. Future network slicing services will need to comply with the same quality standards once introduced.
