SEBI New Margin Rules
SEBI eases margin rules from February 22, 2027, allowing eligible Early Pay-In shares to reduce margin requirements for subsequent cash-market trades.

SEBI has eased margin rules for investors using the Early Pay-In facility. The change will allow the value of eligible shares already delivered to be considered for margin on subsequent cash-market trades.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Thursday, October 22, eased margin rules for investors using the Early Pay-In (EPI) facility in the cash market.

From February 22, 2027, investors who sell shares and deliver them through EPI will be able to use the eligible value of those shares against the margin needed for their next cash-market trade. This could reduce the additional money investors need to keep available when taking another position.

Early Pay-In allows investors to deliver shares they have sold before the normal settlement process is completed. At present, investors get a margin benefit on the transaction for which the shares are delivered. SEBI’s latest change will extend this benefit to subsequent trades as well.

The benefit will be available up to the eligible EPI value accepted by the clearing corporation and will be provided on a real-time basis.

Under the new rules, the margin benefit will become available once the clearing corporation accepts the shares delivered through EPI against an investor’s sell transaction.

The eligible amount will be the lower of the value of shares delivered through EPI and the value of shares sold.

Once the shares are accepted, the eligible amount can be considered while calculating the margin needed for another cash-market trade. This means an investor may need to provide less additional margin for the next trade.

SEBI introduced the change following proposals from the Brokers’ Industry Standards Forum and recommendations of its Risk Management Review Committee.

The change will mainly benefit investors who sell shares through Early Pay-In and then take another position in the cash market.

Instead of arranging the full additional margin for the next trade, the eligible value of shares already delivered can be considered while calculating the margin requirement.

The benefit, however, will be adjusted if the investor later buys back or squares off the original sell position. If this leads to a margin shortfall, the required margin will have to be made available.

The new treatment will not apply to shares in the trade-for-trade segment, where transactions are settled on a gross basis.

SEBI has asked stock exchanges, clearing corporations and other market institutions to make the required changes before the new rules take effect on February 22, 2027.
