SIP Contributions Reach Record ₹32,490 Crore In September While Mutual Fund Industry Assets Drop 5.1%

Summary: SIP contributions climbed to ₹32,490 crore in September 2026 from ₹32,297 crore in August. Meanwhile, mutual fund industry assets dropped 5.1% to ₹82.64 lakh crore, despite a 31% rise in equity fund inflows to ₹38,306.55 crore.
Monthly Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) contributions reached ₹32,490 crore in September 2026, compared with ₹32,297 crore a month earlier, according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) data.
The increase was ₹193 crore, or around 0.6%, marking another monthly high after contributions crossed the ₹32,000 crore mark for the first time in August.
The record inflows came even as the mutual fund industry's total assets under management (AUM) fell 5.1% to ₹82.64 lakh crore at the end of September from ₹87.08 lakh crore a month earlier. Debt fund outflows weighed on the industry's overall assets, while equity-oriented schemes continued to attract fresh money.
How Did SIP Contributions Perform In September 2026?
Investors registered around 63 lakh new SIPs during September, as per AMFI SIP data. The total assets held through SIPs stood at ₹17.86 lakh crore at the end of the month.
The latest figures extend the monthly rise in SIP contributions. August had already set a record, with investments through these plans crossing ₹32,000 crore for the first time. September added to that total, although the month-on-month increase was modest.
SIPs allow investors to put a fixed amount into mutual fund schemes at regular intervals, usually monthly, rather than investing a lump sum. Monthly contributions measure the money invested through these plans during a particular month. SIP AUM, by comparison, represents the value of investments held through them.
Why Did Mutual Fund Industry Assets Fall Despite Record SIP Contributions?
The mutual fund industry's overall AUM declined from ₹87.08 lakh crore at the end of August to ₹82.64 lakh crore on September 30. Debt mutual funds recorded net outflows of ₹1.83 lakh crore during September, according to the AMFI data.
Equity-oriented mutual funds saw a different trend. They attracted ₹38,306.55 crore during the month, up nearly 31% from ₹29,328.62 crore in August. Among equity categories, small-cap funds received the largest inflow at ₹9,038.57 crore. Mid-cap funds drew ₹7,834.84 crore, while flexi-cap schemes attracted ₹6,701.80 crore.
SIP contributions and total mutual fund assets moved in opposite directions in September. The two figures track different things. SIP contributions show the money invested through systematic plans during the month. Total AUM also reflects withdrawals and changes in the market value of investments already held.
The coming months will show whether monthly SIP contributions remain near these levels. Changes in redemptions and market prices will also affect the industry's total assets.
