Stock Market Update 7 August 2026: Sensex Drops Over 300 Pts; Nifty 50 Below 24,600
Both Sensex and Nifty traded in the red after the market opening on Friday, 7 August 2026

The Indian stock market indices traded in the red during early trading on Friday. While Sensex lost nearly 303 points, Nifty 50 traded below the 24,600 mark. Global markets gave mixed cues amid rising crude oil prices.

The Indian benchmark indices were trading in the red after the market opening on Friday, 7 August 2026.

At around 9:17 AM, the Sensex was down by 303.56 points (0.38%) to trade at 78,651.20. The Nifty 50 was also trading lower by around 39 points (0.16%) at 24,596.95.

On Thursday, 6 August 2026, the indices ended in the positive on hopes of stability returning to the Middle East and a tumble in crude oil prices. At the closing bell, the Sensex stood at 78,954.76, up 0.48%. The Nifty 50 stood at 24,636.00, up 0.05%.

Not just the Sensex and the Nifty 50, but other broader Indian indices were also in the red during early trading on Friday.

At around 9:20 AM, Bank Nifty was down by 205.85 points (0.35%) to trade at 57,857.80. The Nifty Financial Services index was down by around 194 points (0.72%) to trade at 26,669.45.

Among the sectoral indices, Nifty Auto (up 0.49%), Nifty Metal (up 0.10%), Nifty FMCG (up 0.37%) and Nifty IT (up 1.06%) were trading in the green. Nifty Pharma (down 0.16%) and Nifty PSU Bank (down 0.50%) were in the red.

At 9:27 AM, the top gainers on the Nifty included Siemens Energy, Samvardhana Motherson, Britannia Industries, LTM and Tech Mahindra.

The top losers were Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Trent, Shriram Finance and Tata Capital.

The global markets gave mixed cues on Friday:

  • S&P 500 futures were little changed as of 11:57 AM Tokyo time.

  • Japan’s Topix rose 0.1%.

  • Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was little changed.

  • Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was little changed.

  • The Shanghai Composite rose 0.4%.

  • Euro Stoxx 50 futures fell 0.2%.

  • Middle East Scenario: Investor sentiments were weighed down on Friday amid renewed concerns over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is considering restricting the passage of vehicles it considers hostile through the strategic waterway.

  • Oil Prices: Global crude oil prices edged higher on Friday as concerns over the supply chain heightened. Brent crude traded above $83 per barrel.

  • Rupee Movement: The Indian National Rupee (INR) opened at 95.28 per US dollar on Friday. The previous close was at 95.22 per US dollar.

Investors are cautious due to renewed concerns over the Strait of Hormuz and rising oil prices. Investors must keep an eye on these developments before taking major positions.
