The Nifty 50 and the Sensex maintained strong momentum in afternoon trade. Robust performance from information technology (IT), banking and financial stocks supported benchmarks. At 12:04 pm, the Sensex was up 0.45%, while the Nifty 50 was up 0.37%.

However, weakness was recorded in broader markets. At 12:05 pm, the:

  • Nifty Midcap 100 index was down 0.29%

  • Nifty Smallcap 100 index was down 0.46%

Stocks of the following companies were the top five performers on the Nifty 50 index at 12:06 pm:

  • Infosys Ltd.

  • Tech Mahindra Ltd.

  • HCL Technologies Ltd.

  • Titan Company Ltd.

  • Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.

  • Kalyan Jewellers’ shares fell as much as 7.5% in early trade despite the company reporting a strong business update for the June quarter.

  • Cochin Shipyard shares tumbled as much as 4% in early trade after the government’s offer for sale (OFS) opened for non-retail investors.

  • Titan shares gained 2% in early trade after the company reported a 41% year-on-year rise in its consumer business for the June quarter.

  • Trent shares crashed as much as 10% in early trade despite reporting a 19% year-on-year increase in standalone revenue for the June quarter.

  • Apollo Micro Systems shares tumbled nearly 5% in intraday deals after the company’s board approved a fund raise of nearly ₹3,322 crore through preferential shares and convertible warrants.

  • Shares of all four recently listed Vedanta companies declined up to 5% in early trade. In the process, some of them extended their losses, while others erased some gains.

  • RITES shares soared as much as 9% in intraday deals after the company bagged a USD 36 million locomotive order from South Africa.

It will be interesting to note if IT, banking and financial stocks can maintain their momentum in the afternoon trade. If yes, they can help benchmark indices close on a high at the end of today's trade. On the other hand, profit booking could lead to a loss of momentum.
