Monday Blues Grip Dalal Street: Sensex Loses 876 Points, Nifty Closes Below 22,900 As Banking Stocks Slide
Sensex plunges 876 points and Nifty closes below 22,900 as banking stocks slide amid oil price concerns and FII outflows.

The week opened on a weak note for Indian equities. Down 876 points, the Sensex recorded a sharp setback, while the Nifty 50 breached the 22,900 mark on the downside. Banking heavyweights were among the key drags. Elevated oil prices, uneasy global cues, profit booking and continued foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows further dampened sentiment.

A volatile start gave way to further losses in Indian equities on Monday. Selling pressure refused to ease, leaving both benchmarks firmly in negative territory by the closing bell.

  • BSE Sensex: Fell 876.37 points (1.17%) to 73,852.90.

  • Nifty 50: Declined 257.21 points (1.11%) to 22,888.95.

Financial stocks took the hardest hit. Elsewhere, a few sectors managed modest advances, offering only limited relief in an otherwise cautious session.

Selling was pronounced in information technology and automobile shares, while selected energy, steel and transport stocks advanced.

Public sector banks led sectoral gains, with Nifty PSU Bank index up 2.46% followed by cement, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and broader-market indices. Automobile, oil and gas, and metal stocks also recorded advances in parts of the market.

Private banks faced the strongest selling pressure. Chemicals, financial services, real estate and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) shares also declined, while IT stocks remained mixed amid selective buying.

Five key factors shaped the downturn: weakness in heavyweight banking shares, elevated oil prices, subdued global signals, profit booking and persistent FII outflows.

MCX bullion contracts traded marginally lower, according to the supplied market statistics.

In the energy segment, natural gas futures rose 0.30% to ₹299.50, while natural gas mini contracts gained 0.20% to ₹299.30. Crude oil futures declined 0.11% to ₹9,383.00. Copper slipped 0.07% to ₹1,400.05.

Global markets offered a mixed backdrop for domestic equities. S&P 500 futures rose 0.8%, while Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 1.3% in the reported snapshot. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index was little changed, and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index fell 0.1%.

Japan’s Topix was also little changed, while the Shanghai Composite gained 0.6%. Euro Stoxx 50 futures declined 0.3%.

The session ended with Indian benchmarks under pressure as domestic selling outweighed pockets of resilience across sectors and mixed overseas market signals.
