Closing Bell, 16 October 2026: Sensex Gains 414 Points, Nifty Above 23,100; Gold And Silver Advance On MCX
Sensex gains 414 points and Nifty closes above 23,100 as gold and silver futures rise while crude oil prices fall.

Indian equity benchmarks closed higher on Friday after recovering from intraday losses, supported by IT stocks, easing oil prices, softer bond yields and a stronger rupee. The Sensex gained 414 points, while the Nifty 50 finished above 23,100. Gold and silver futures advanced on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), whereas crude oil and natural gas contracts declined.

Indian equities staged a recovery on Friday after a volatile session briefly pushed the benchmarks into negative territory. Buying interest in information technology (IT) shares, following Tech Mahindra’s upbeat earnings, helped lift sentiment.

At the close:

  • BSE Sensex gained 436.65 points (0.59%) to close at 74,729.27

  • Nifty 50 advanced 148.81 points (0.65%) to settle at 23,146.15

The rebound followed the benchmarks’ move to four-month highs in the previous session.

Technology stocks featured prominently among the session’s strongest performers. Bharti Airtel also advanced, while selected aviation, healthcare, consumer and financial stocks faced selling pressure.

IT shares led sectoral gains, followed by media, metals and cement. Automobile stocks also advanced, while public sector banks recorded modest gains.

Financial services, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), oil and gas, and private banks ended under pressure. Pharmaceutical, real estate and consumer durables stocks remained relatively steady.

Four factors supported the recovery: sustained IT-sector momentum, cooling bond yields, easing international oil prices and the rupee’s fifth consecutive session of gains.

Bullion futures advanced on Friday, with silver outperforming gold. The following prices were displayed in the supplied MCX market data.

Copper rose 0.73% to ₹1,409.05, while aluminium gained 1.83% to ₹7,123.00.

Energy contracts traded lower on both international and domestic markets. At 3:47 pm IST, the supplied international price table showed US crude oil at 97.235, down 0.75%, and Brent at 105.480, down 0.42%.

On MCX, crude oil futures for 19 October 2026 fell 0.56% to ₹9,233. Natural gas futures expiring on 27 October declined 0.82% to ₹303.50.

Despite the daily declines, the international data showed crude oil remained substantially higher year on year, with US crude up 70.18% and Brent up 72.22%.

Global equities provided a supportive backdrop. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index climbed 1.4%, while Japan’s Topix rose 1.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced 1%, and the Shanghai Composite edged up 0.2%.

US S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures each gained 0.1%, while Euro Stoxx 50 futures rose 0.8%.

The domestic market ended the week’s Friday session on a firmer note, led by technology stocks. However, weakness across several sectors and falling energy futures reflected divergent trends across asset classes.
