The benchmark indices snapped a four-session winning streak on July 7 as IT stocks gained, while profit booking dragged down select auto, metal and consumer counters.

Information technology stocks bucked the broader market weakness on Tuesday, with Infosys, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra emerging as the top gainers on the Nifty 50. On the other hand, Trent witnessed sharp selling after its June-quarter business update, while Coal India, Adani Enterprises and Hindalco Industries featured among the day's biggest losers.

The benchmark indices ended marginally lower during the session, but stock-specific action remained in focus as investors rotated into technology shares while booking profits in select consumer, metal and industrial counters.

Technology stocks accounted for most of the gains on the benchmark, while select financial and consumer-focused companies also attracted buying interest.

Infosys emerged as the top gainer on the Nifty 50, while HCLTech and Tech Mahindra also gained over 2% as buying returned to frontline IT stocks after recent weakness. TCS extended the strength in the technology pack, while SBI Life Insurance, Titan and Eternal also featured among the session's notable gainers.

Selling pressure was concentrated in consumer, metal and industrial stocks, with Trent emerging as the biggest drag on the benchmark.

Trent slumped nearly 12% after its June-quarter business update fell short of Street expectations, triggering heavy selling in the stock. Coal India, Adani Enterprises and Hindalco Industries also ended lower, while Larsen & Toubro, Bharat Electronics and TVS Motor featured among the other notable laggards.

Despite the weakness in several heavyweight stocks, gains in technology shares helped prevent a sharper decline in the benchmark indices.

Outside the benchmark, Info Edge (India), Swiggy and Persistent Systems emerged as the top gainers in the Nifty Midcap 100, while GE Vernova T&D India, Hitachi Energy India and PB Fintech led the declines.

In the Nifty Smallcap 100, PhysicsWallah, Natco Pharma and Gland Pharma finished among the biggest gainers. Zensar Technologies, Ola Electric Mobility and Pine Labs were the top losers.

Attention will now shift to the June-quarter earnings calendar, with several large-cap companies scheduled to announce their results this week. Quarterly earnings, management commentary and business updates are expected to remain the key drivers of stock-specific movements across sectors in the coming sessions.
