Buying remained selective on Tuesday, with healthcare and telecom stocks attracting investors while IT and financial shares witnessed profit booking. Broader markets also saw stock-specific action despite a largely range-bound benchmark.
Healthcare and telecom stocks lent support to the benchmark on Tuesday, while profit booking in information technology and financial counters kept gains in check. Bharti Airtel, Apollo Hospitals and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries emerged among the top performers on the Nifty 50, whereas HCLTech, Shriram Finance and InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) featured among the biggest losers.
Top Nifty 50 Gainers
Buying interest was concentrated in healthcare and telecom names, while select banking and metal stocks also ended higher.
Bharti Airtel | +1.80% |
Apollo Hospitals | +1.35% |
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries | +1.14% |
Cipla | +0.95% |
Dr Reddy's Laboratories | +0.90% |
Tata Steel | +0.80% |
ICICI Bank | +0.75% |
Bharti Airtel (+1.80%) topped the gainers' list as telecom stocks continued to see steady buying ahead of the earnings season.
Apollo Hospitals (+1.35%) advanced as investors accumulated healthcare names, a pocket that tends to draw flows on days when appetite for high-beta sectors fades.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (+1.14%) and Cipla (+0.95%) gained on renewed interest in defensives, moving in step with the broader pharma pack.
Dr Reddy's Laboratories (+0.90%) recovered from the previous session's sharp decline, with bargain buying at lower levels supporting the stock.
Tata Steel (+0.80%) edged higher as select metal stocks attracted buying interest.
ICICI Bank (+0.75%) added modest gains ahead of its quarterly earnings, standing out on a day when the wider financial pack came under pressure.
Top Nifty 50 Losers
Selling pressure was visible in information technology, financial and automobile stocks during the session.
HCLTech | -4.13% |
Shriram Finance | -3.14% |
HDFC Life Insurance | -2.98% |
InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) | -2.68% |
TVS Motor Company | -2.56% |
Tata Consumer Products | -2.10% |
Bajaj Finserv | -1.85% |
HCLTech (-4.13%) was the biggest drag on the benchmark, giving up part of the sharp rally that followed its June-quarter earnings as investors booked profits at higher levels.
Shriram Finance (-3.14%) and HDFC Life Insurance (-2.98%) came under pressure as financial stocks saw sectoral rotation, with money moving out of rate-sensitive names into defensives.
InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) (-2.68%) extended losses as elevated crude oil prices kept aviation fuel cost concerns in focus. Fuel is typically an airline's single largest operating expense, leaving the stock exposed whenever crude firms up.
TVS Motor Company (-2.56%) slipped amid profit booking in automobile stocks.
Tata Consumer Products (-2.10%) and Bajaj Finserv (-1.85%) also finished lower.
