Closing Bell, 23 September 2026: Sensex And Nifty Close In The Positive
Sensex and Nifty 50 ended higher in today’s trading session.

Benchmark indices closed in positive territory, supported by improved sentiment around the Middle East war. Read more on what moved markets today.

The Sensex and Nifty 50 finished the day on a high, with both making gains. A possible de-escalation of the Middle East war boosted sentiment and helped benchmarks close in the positive. Upon close, the:

  • Sensex stood at 74,828.25 points, up 0.40%

  • Nifty 50 stood at 23,446.80 points, up 0.50%

Broader markets also ended in the green. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 finished 0.70% and 0.89% higher, respectively. Sector-wise, the Nifty Metal rose 2.40%, while the Nifty IT declined 0.87%.

The following stocks were the top five gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Crude oil prices tumbled in early trade after Saudi Arabia restored crude oil flows through a key pipeline to the Red Sea. At around 15:36, Brent crude November futures stood at $99.29 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil November futures stood at $89.71 per barrel.

Gold and silver traded lower on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). At 15:37, MCX gold prices for October 2026 futures stood at ₹1,52,126 per 10 grams, down 0.39%. At the same time, MCX silver prices for December 2026 futures stood at ₹2,38,031 per kg, down 0.77%.

Here are some other headlines for the day:

  • India’s real GDP growth is now projected at 7% for FY27 by S&P Global Ratings, up from its earlier estimate of 6.6%, after the economy grew faster than expected in the June quarter. The agency expects a 25-basis-point RBI rate hike during the FY27.

  • India’s private sector activity gained pace in September, hitting a three-month high as output increased in the manufacturing and services sectors, a private survey showed on Wednesday. The HSBC Flash India Manufacturing PMI rose sharply to 55.7 in September from 52.8 in August, while the Flash India Services PMI Business Activity Index advanced to 55.8 from 54.1.

Equities may remain sensitive to Middle East developments in the next session. A further easing in tensions could support risk appetite, while the sharp fall in crude prices may benefit oil-sensitive sectors. Investors could also watch global cues and fresh developments around the conflict.
