Closing Bell, 17 September 2026: Benchmarks End On A Muted Note

Benchmarks ended on a muted note at the end of today’s trading session as traders analysed the outcome of the Fed’s rate hike. At the closing bell, the:

• Sensex finished almost flat at 74,314.59, down 0.03%

• Nifty 50 ended in the positive, though slightly, at 23,270.60, up 0.23%

Broader markets, however, finished the day in the positive. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 closed 0.92% and 0.76% higher, respectively. Sector-wise, the Nifty Realty, Nifty Auto, Nifty Metal and Nifty IT outperformed (see table).

Crude Oil Prices Today

Oil prices fell in early trade after reports emerged that Saudi Arabia was offering additional crude cargoes via Oman. However, they are still above the $100 per barrel mark. At around 15:38, Brent crude oil November 2026 futures stood at $103.51 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil October 2026 futures stood at $100.62 per barrel.

Gold And Silver Prices Today

Gold and silver traded lower on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). At 15:39, MCX gold prices for October 2026 futures stood at ₹1,51,413 per 10 grams, down 0.69%. At the same time, MCX silver prices for December 2026 futures stood at ₹2,33,092 per kg, down 0.72%.

Here are some other headlines for the day:

• Semicon India 2.0 aims to support at least 200 startups and companies working on chip design in India. It also seeks to develop 1 lakh semiconductor technicians and other skilled talent for the industry.

• Brookfield will invest up to $600 million in ACME Cleantech Ventures, the green molecules platform of ACME Group. The investment will support the development and construction of clean energy projects across India and the Middle East.

The greater focus in the next few sessions is likely to remain on global markets after the Fed’s rate hike. Their movement can decide the course of direction for markets back home. Movements in crude oil, the rupee and US bond yields could continue to influence domestic equities.
