Closing Bell, 12 August 2026: Sensex, Nifty 50 End In The Negative
Sensex and Nifty 50 ended lower as Middle East tensions, crude oil prices and global cues weighed on markets.

The Sensex and Nifty 50 ended lower on Wednesday as domestic and global factors weighed on sentiment. Broader markets finished mixed. Read more. 

A combination of domestic and global factors pulled benchmarks in today’s trading session, with both the Sensex and the Nifty 50 ending the day in the negative. At the closing bell, the:

  • BSE Sensex stood at 77,966.35, down 0.24%

  • Nifty 50 stood at 24,435.95, down 0.15%

Broader markets ended the day mixed. The Nifty Midcap 100 index ended 0.28% higher. On the other hand, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index ended 0.18% lower.

Sector-wise, the Nifty IT, Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty FMCG underperformed. The Nifty PSU Bank, however, outperformed (see table).

Here are the top five gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Gold and silver prices edged up, with both trading high on the Multi Exchange Commodity (MCX). At 15:40, MCX gold prices for October futures stood at ₹1,55,057 per 10 grams, up 0.84%. MCX silver prices for September futures during the same time stood at ₹2,40,050 per kg, up 1.86%.

Some of the other major headlines of the day are as follows:

  • Ola Electric Mobility said that the Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved revised timelines for its wholly-owned subsidiary Ola Cell Technologies Pvt. Ltd. under the Advanced Chemistry Cell Production Linked Incentive scheme.

  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is set to transfer its data centre and cloud services business to Vyoma.AI for ₹1,400 crore.

  • Large-cap mutual funds witnessed a net outflow of ₹1,322 crore in July, their largest monthly outflow in more than 2.6 years.

Crude oil prices continued to rise amid the fragile situation in the Middle East. At 15:41, Brent oil futures for October 2026 stood at $88.73 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures for September 2026 stood at $83.01 per barrel.

Markets are likely to remain cautious in the next trading session as investors track developments in the Middle East and the movement in crude oil prices. Global market cues and fresh domestic developments are likely to guide the opening and subsequent market movement in the upcoming trading sessions.
