Closing Bell, 1 October 2026: Benchmarks Finish In The Red

Equities ended lower on Thursday as investors remained cautious amid the prolonged West Asia crisis, sustained FII selling, a weaker rupee and losses across key sectors.
Benchmarks, the Sensex and Nifty 50, declined and ended the session in the red. The West Asia crisis, which has shown little sign of coming to an end, took a toll on investors’ sentiment. A decline in auto stocks, persistent selling from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and a weaker rupee further spooked investors.

Broader markets also felt the heat, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 tanking 1.01% and 0.97%, respectively. Sectorally, the Nifty Auto, Nifty Metal, Nifty Realty and Nifty Consumer Durables underperformed. On the other hand, the Nifty IT closed higher (see table below).
