Wall Street Posts Weekly Gains
Wall Street stocks post weekly gains as investors prepare for earnings reports and inflation data.

Wall Street ended higher on 9 October 2026. The Dow gained 0.83%, the S&P 500 rose by 0.59% and the Nasdaq advanced by 0.64%.

US stock markets ended higher on Friday, with all three major indices recording weekly gains. Investors turned their attention to the upcoming third-quarter earnings season and inflation figures. These reports could influence the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.84% to 51,661.54. The S&P 500 gained 0.60% to 7,811.71, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.64% to 27,365.00. However, the small-cap Russell 2000 finished below its previous Friday’s closing level.

Investors are preparing for a busy week as major US banks begin reporting their third-quarter results. Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are among the financial institutions scheduled to announce their earnings.

Analysts expect companies in the S&P 500 to deliver aggregate annual earnings growth of 30.6% for the July–September quarter. The energy sector is forecast to record growth of 123%, while technology earnings are projected to increase by 66.5%.

Inflation data will also be closely monitored for clues about the Federal Reserve’s policy direction.

Technology shares are generally advanced, supported by continued interest in artificial intelligence. However, Apple fell 1.1% following reports that it had asked some suppliers to reduce production of components for its iPhone 18 Pro models amid rising memory chip costs and concerns about consumer demand.

Telecom stocks came under pressure after SpaceX agreed to acquire a nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio. Shares of T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon declined between 8.8% and 13.3%, reflecting concerns about increased competition.

Humana shares surged 11.6% after US government data indicated that 95% of its Medicare Advantage members were enrolled in plans rated four stars or higher for 2027.
