IEX Subsidiary Applies For Licence To Start Coal Trading Exchange

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) has applied for a licence to start a coal exchange through its wholly owned subsidiary, Indian Coal Exchange Limited. The proposed platform will handle physical coal trading and provide a common marketplace for buyers and sellers.
Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) is moving into coal trading with Indian Coal Exchange Limited, its wholly owned subsidiary. The company has applied to the Coal Controller Organisation (CCO) for a licence to operate the exchange.
IEX incorporated Indian Coal Exchange on 1 June 2026, with an authorised share capital of ₹100 crore. The exchange will be based on physical delivery of coal.
The proposed marketplace will operate in line with the Coal Exchange Rules, 2026. Trading between buyers and sellers will take place through designated delivery points.
Exchange To Bring Buyers And Sellers Together
Indian Coal Exchange will provide a single platform for coal buyers and sellers. Trades will take place at designated delivery points, with the exchange providing the infrastructure for transactions and price discovery.
The platform will use technology to organise trading and give market participants access to a wider set of counterparties.
IEX Adds Coal To Its Energy Businesses
The proposed coal exchange will sit alongside IEX's existing electricity market business and Indian Gas Exchange (IGX), its natural gas trading platform.
IEX also facilitates the issuance of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) in India.
The coal venture marks the group's expansion into another segment of the energy market. Its operations will depend on the licence application being approved by the CCO.
